The game

One real match, one room, three players each. You draft before kick-off, name a captain, the match does the rest, and the highest total at full time wins.

  1. 1

    Create or join a room

Pick a Premier League or Champions League match, set the entry (free or paid) and choose public or private. Share the invite link with your mates.

  2. 2

    Fill it up

Rooms take 2 to 6 players. The draft starts at the time the host picked, at least 90 minutes before kick-off. If fewer than 2 players have joined by then, the room is cancelled and entries are refunded.

  3. 3

    Draft 3 players

A snake draft: the order reverses each round, so the last pick of round one gets the first of round two. You have 60 seconds a pick. Can’t be there? Set a draft queue in the room (it’s optional): if your clock runs out we take the top player in it still available, or the best-known player left if none are.

  4. 4

    Name your captain

Everything your captain scores counts ×1.5. Your first pick gets the armband when the draft ends; move it to either of your other players any time before kick-off.

  5. 5

    Watch them score

Your players earn points from their real stats in the match: goals, assists, tackles and more, updated live.

  6. 6

    Top score wins

Highest total at full time takes 90% of the pot (a tie splits it). Free rooms are for bragging rights.

  2. Round 2A8B7C6D5
  3. Round 3A9B10C11D12

Small numbers are the pick order. Player D picks 4th and 5th: last in round one, first in round two.

The captain's armband

Every team has a captain. It is your first pick when the draft ends, and you can move it to either of your other players until kick-off. After that it is locked.

Positive points are multiplied by the player's confidence multiplier; deductions aren't. Boosts then multiply the whole score, deductions included, and they stack. Players who don't come on score nothing. Positions are the ones shown in the draft.

03The rulebook

Multiplier & boosts

Every player in a match has a confidence multiplier from 1.0x to 1.9x. The safer the pick, the lower it is. It is locked the moment you draft, and it only ever multiplies positive points. Three boosts then multiply a player's whole score.

  • ×1.5

    Captain

One of your three players. Your first pick to begin with; change it any time before kick-off.

    Any position

  • ×1.5

    Hat-trick (3+ goals)

A midfielder or forward who scores 3 or more in the match.

    Midfielders and Forwards

  • ×1.2

    Goalkeeper clean sheet

A goalkeeper who earns the clean sheet: 60+ minutes, nothing conceded while on.

    Goalkeepers

Boosts apply after the multiplier and the deductions, so they multiply everything the player ended on, and they stack: a captain who scores a hat-trick gets ×2.25. A boost on a score below zero makes it worse.

What keeps it near 1.0x

  • Starts every week and rates highly: only a regular starter comes down to 1.0x
  • Plays for the clear favourite, going by the bookmakers' odds
  • Has been scoring or assisting lately
  • A defender or keeper behind a tight defence

What pushes it towards 1.9x

  • Often rotated or on the bench: minutes count the most
  • Plays for the underdog, above all a goalkeeper
  • An attacker or midfielder starting without a goal or assist lately
  • A defender or keeper whose team keeps conceding

Players on their club's injury list keep their multiplier and are marked OUT (ruled out) or DOUBT (may not play) in the draft; the auto-pick skips both. Whether they play is your call, so check the team news: a player who doesn't play scores nothing.

Real examples

One match, six players, scored exactly as the app would score them. Each line is something the player did; the working underneath is the positive points times the multiplier, less the deductions, times any boost. No captain is applied here: that depends on who drafted them.

Working(26 × 1.35x − 0.5) × 1.5 = 51.9

Three goals at 5 each, four shots on target and the rating bonus. A goalless striker away to the heavy favourites carries a higher multiplier, and the hat-trick boost then multiplies the whole score by 1.5.

About these numbers. The stat lines and match ratings are the real ones from each match, from the same data feed the app scores from, with players in the position that feed listed them in. The multipliers are the ones 3V3's confidence model gives each player going into that match, rebuilt from his first four league games of the season and the league table at the time. Nobody drafted these matches in 3V3, so they are a reconstruction rather than a recorded pick.

  • Brian BrobbeyCFWD · Sunderland · 1.35x77.9
  • Enzo Le FéeMID · Sunderland · 1.15x15.5
  • Nordi MukieleDEF · Sunderland · 1.5x19

The first player in each team is its captain. This is one result, and it flattered the brave: Sunderland scored three. Had Man City won 4–0, the same away trio would have had very little to multiply. The multiplier pays you for taking a risk. It does not remove it.

  • Price the multiplier, not the name

A 1.0x star has to outscore a 1.5x pick by half as much again just to draw level. Ask who gives you the most points after the multiplier, not who is the best player.

  • Read the match first

Expect a tight game? Defenders and keepers bank 5 for a clean sheet. Expect goals? Take attackers, and think about the underdog's keeper, who earns a point for every save.

  • Defenders have the bigger payout

A defender's goal is worth 7 and an assist 4, against 5 and 3 for a forward. Centre-backs who attack set pieces and full-backs who cross are worth a look.

  • Work the snake

Pick last in round one and you pick first in round two: two players back to back. Pick first and you wait the longest, so take the one player nobody else can replace.

  • Minutes are points

The draft happens at least 90 minutes before kick-off, before the team sheets are out. A substitute misses the 2 points for 60 minutes and any clean sheet, and a player who never comes on scores nothing. That risk is what a high multiplier pays for.

  • Fouls and cards cost the same at 1.9x

The confidence multiplier never touches deductions, so a high one does not soften them. A yellow is −1, a red −3 and every foul −0.5, whoever you drafted. Boosts make them bigger.

  • Captain your surest points

The armband multiplies whatever your captain ends on by 1.5. That is worth most on your most reliable scorer. On a risky pick it swings both ways: a captain who never comes on boosts nothing, and one who finishes below zero costs you more.

  • A keeper is a real pick now

A clean sheet is 5 points and then ×1.2 on everything the keeper scored, saves included. In a match that looks tight, the favourite's keeper can outscore a forward.

  • A hat-trick is a bonus, not a plan

3 goals from a midfielder or forward multiplies their whole score by 1.5, and by 2.25 if they wear the armband. They are rare. Draft the player you expect to score once, and enjoy it when the third goes in.
